Clinton pressures China over territorial disputes

SANYA, China (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday made a rare visit by an American official to a Chinese island once a flash point in relations between the powers and pressed Beijing to settle territorial disputes with its smaller, wary neighbors.

The Obama administration's top diplomat also urged Chinese officials to use their influence with North Korea to keep the communist country from taking any provocative actions that might disrupt a summit of world leaders set for South Korea next month.

Israeli settlers blocked roads, scuffled with police and pelted officers with eggs on Sunday, in the most aggressive display of resistance yet to the government's ban on new housing construction in West Bank settlements.

Trying to calm the tensions, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the pain his order has caused to the settlers. But he said the freeze was necessary to demonstrate that Israel is serious about seeking peace, and he criticized the Palestinians for rejecting the gesture.

Schiene fires course-best 67 at Illinois Open

Marty Schiene of Naperville was at the top of his game when hewon consecutive Illinois Opens in 1991 and 1992, then earned hisplaying privileges on the PGA Tour the next season.

Five years ago this month, Paul Wolfowitz, then the U.S. Defense Department's second-ranking official, dropped in on this northern Iraqi city to take its temperature. He walked the streets, chatted with locals and came to a quick conclusion: The people here had grown impatient with post-invasion chaos.

"The biggest problem is people need jobs," Wolfowitz told an accompanying reporter, adding, "Some people (Iraqis) think that because we're the United States, we can fix things right away. We can't."
