DiGi to pay out 43 sen a share
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Business Times
Type: Company
KUALA LUMPUR: DiGi.Com Bhd, the smallest of the country's three cellular line operators, said it plans to pay 43 sen a share tax- exempt dividend to its shareholders.
In a statement to the stock exchange, DiGi said that the ex date for the dividend is May 19, while the entitlement is on May 23.
The company sought a one-hour trading halt yesterday to make the announcement.
It also said that net profit for the first quarter ended March 2011 increased 19 per cent to RM331.3 million from RM278.2 million in the comparable period a year ago.
The increase in net profits was contributed by increased usage from its larger subscriber base of 8.8 million customers.
Similarly, the telecommunications provider also saw its revenue increase 11 per cent to RM1.4 billion from RM1.2 billion previously.
The growth in revenue was helped by an increased data revenue, which grew by 38 per cent year-on-year to RM361.7 million, as well as revenue contribution from handset-bundled offerings.
Nevertheless, the average revenue per user declined slightly to RM50 (2010: RM53) as a result of new customers coming in at lower spend levels, competitive price pressures as well as reduced domestic interconnect revenue, following the lower regulated mobile termination rate, which took effect beginning July 2010.
Data continues to be a key revenue driver precipitated by the group's strong focus on stimulating higher data usage as well as strong take-up of smart bundles and increased adoption of smart- phones in the market.
As a result of this focus, at the end of this quarter the group had over 4.5 million Internet users and foresees demand for data services to continue trending up going forward.
On the outlook for the remaining quarters of 2011, the group maintains its target to achieve high single-digit revenue growth.

SA:New microscopic species discovered in SA
South Australian ecologists have discovered four new microscopic species that play
a vital part in regional food chains.
Three ecologists working with the state government's Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray
Mouth Program discovered the zooplankton while undertaking environmental monitoring in
the region.
Environment and Conservation Minister PAUL CAICA says studying the microscopic animals
will provide critical water quality information for the CLLMM Program's drought recovery
work.
Zooplankton are also a base food source for juvenile fish, and are important for the
survival of the region's native fish species.

PGA M2M Utilizes New Boundary's TankVista Solution04003005
Type: News
New Boundary Technologies said that PGA M2M, Inc., a reseller, systems integrator and services provider dedicated to the wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) and mobile work force automation marketplace, has integrated the company's TankVista solution and is now reselling its own cloud-based, plug-and-play remote tank monitoring solution.
TankVista is a web-based service that takes raw data from tank sensors and delivers online access to metrics such as tank levels, temperature, pressure and humidity from any computer with an Internet connection. TankVista's friendly, easy-to-use interface features a built-in mapping tool that shows tank locations and conditions to streamline tank servicing and inventory management. Tank managers can also use TankVista to readily share data throughout an organization - including operations, sales and finance - regardless of retail or regional location.
Tank monitoring across multiple locations is largely inefficient, manual, unsafe and inaccurate, and most automated solutions require expensive customized solutions to take raw tank sensor data and translate it into actionable information, graphics and maps.
"With our new TankVista-based solution, we can deliver clients instant access to the information they need to better manage their storage tanks - eliminating manual processes, improving worker safety and increasing product margins," said Peter Stunden, president of PGA M2M. "Companies will see immediate productivity and efficiency gains, and hard ROI in less than one year. New Boundary Technologies and TankVista put PGA M2M and our customers in complete control over remote tank monitoring."
New Boundary Technologies' Chief Executive Officer Kim Pearson stresses the importance of TankVista's hosted, plug-and-play service: "As a system integrator, the cloud-based nature of TankVista is critical; PGA M2M and its customers never have to worry about installing or updating software. We are also continuously enhancing TankVista, allowing companies to stay at the forefront of remote tank management and analysis. TankVista immediately helps PGA M2M and other system integrators and resellers define themselves as a clear-cut M2M tank monitoring pioneers."

BRISBANE, Dec 1 AAP - It's believed the body of a woman missing in floodwaters in central
Queensland has been found.

The 55-year-old woman had called for help after her car became stuck in floodwaters
between Middlemount and Dysart, southwest of Mackay, on Tuesday morning.
Rescue workers found her car later that day, as they searched floodwaters caused by
heavy rain around Golden Mile Road, at Dysart. But there was no sign of the woman.

FED: Singapore Airlines clears passenger backlog
SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Singapore Airlines has cleared its backlog of European passengers
stranded in Australia and its international schedules have returned to normal following
the Icelandic volcano chaos.
The airline announced on Sunday that outbound passengers affected by the closure of
European airspace had either left Australia or were booked on flights to leave.
"Singapore Airlines is pleased to announce all its flights are now operating as per
its usual international network schedule," a statement from the carrier said on Sunday.
"Additionally, the backlog of its European customers stranded in Australia as a result
of the European airspace closure has been cleared, with affected passengers either safely
en route to their intended destinations or booked on a flight to travel at their earliest
convenience."
Meanwhile Qantas says it will be two or three days before its backlog to Europe is cleared.
A spokeswoman for the airline told AAP on Sunday its services were back to normal
but the backlog would take time to clear.
The airline has provided additional services to Europe to help get passengers home.
Thousands of passengers across the world have faced long delays because of the volcanic
eruption, which spewed ash into the air across Britain and continental Europe.
Flights only resumed landings in Sydney on April 22 after officials ruled flying was again safe.

Qld: Friends, school pay tribute to rugby player
By David Barbeler
BRISBANE, Aug 3 AAP - A southeast Queensland teenager who died after a rugby training
mishap was a "strong Christian" who advocated for the underdog, his school principal says.
Lewis Moss, 16, died in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital on Sunday.
He had been in intensive care for 11 days after suffering severe head injuries from
a training accident at the Christian Outreach College in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane.
School principal Mark Butlin said the community was mourning a student, brother, friend,
football player and talented drummer.
"Lewis was a friend to many, who never had a bad thing to say about anyone," Mr Butlin said.
"His life, whilst tragically cut short at such a young age, will always be remembered
for his devotion to others, advocating for the underdog and his love for his family.
"Lewis was a strong Christian young man who lived out his faith every day."
Mr Butlin said while the college had completed its investigations, the medical authorities
were continuing with "routine procedures".
The school was providing counselling to students.
"I take this opportunity to thank God for Lewis's inspirational life and his positive
contribution to our college," Mr Butlin said.
On Lewis' MySpace webpage, he described himself as a drummer in an "awesome" four-piece
Christian band called "4 His Glory".
He also said he one day wanted to grow up and have kids.
"(I have also) just joined another absolutely awesome band with three sweet friends
from school (and we are) called `My Only'," Lewis wrote on July 17 - just days before
the accident took place.
"I love my friends and I love football, and pretty much every sport."
Lewis' friends have left over a dozen heartfelt messages on the MySpace page since
he went into hospital 11 days ago.
The most recent is from one of his best friends, known as Jamin Young, 17, who paid
tribute to Lewis by saying he was one of the nicest guys he knew.
"All I really want to say is that I am and have always been nothing but proud to call
you one of my best mates," he wrote.
"Party it up for me in heaven bro. I love you man. Goodbye."

FED: Swan says budget deficit inevitable=2

FED: Swan says budget deficit inevitable=2
That follows a prediction from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week that
the economy would contract, shrinking by 0.2 per cent in 2009. But the average deficit
across developed nations is even per cent, it said.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is tipped to cut interest rates again next week
by as much as 75 basis points.
Mr Swan said the $50 billion reduction in tax receipts over four years was enough to
push the budget into deficit on its own but there would be other impacts as well.
He said in the mid-year economic forecast in November the government wrote down revenues
from all tax sources by $40 billion.
Since then, the global situation had deteriorated further and Australia was not immune.
"The global recession will give Australia a temporary deficit but of course that is
happening right around the world," he said.
"We are much better positioned than many other countries."
Mr Swan said Australia had to respond by supporting domestic growth and the government
was ahead of the game, launching its economic security strategy last October at just the
right time.
He said the benefits were flowing through the economy now but more was to come.
"What we are doing right now is looking at all options, given the substantial deterioration
that has occurred during that period and the grim outlook that now comes out of bodies
like the IMF," he said.
Mr Swan said he had a strong preference for direct investment in nation-building infrastructure.
He said incentives for business investment were always important.
"But we must never forget that in this environment where there has been a collapse
in global demand, the most important thing for the government to do to stimulate the economy
is to stimulate demand so that business actually has some customers," he said.

BRISBANE, April 16 AAP - A Queensland Labor MP has taken three months leave to seek
treatment for depression and anxiety.
Premier Anna Bligh told state parliament today that Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce had
been battling depression for some time and was under continuing psychiatric care.
In a letter read by Ms Bligh to his colleagues, Mr Pearce said he had recently been
diagnosed as suffering from severe depression and an anxiety disorder.
"My doctor has informed me that I must take this time away from my parliamentary and
electorate duties so that I may receive the treatment and support that I need," Mr Pearce
said.
"If I do not do so, my doctor fears it may have severe consequences for my personal health.
"I would hope that my openness about my illness may encourage others, especially those
from rural and regional areas, my fellow Vietnam veterans and other returned servicemen
and women to ask for help and seek the assistance they may require."
Mr Pearce served in Vietnam where he was promoted to corporal. He later received a
Letter of Commendation for his service.
Mr Pearce, who was elected to parliament in 1989, will also resign from his role as
chairman of the parliamentary Travelsafe committee.
Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten will shadow Mr Pearce's central Queensland

NSW: New study reveals high cost of alcohol on emergency dept
By Sonya Neufeld
SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP - Alcohol-related injuries are costing NSW hospitals more than $3
million a year, according to research that shows one in three emergency patients had been
drinking.
The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) interviewed and examined the medical
records of 1,345 patients admitted to the emergency department at St Vincent's Hospital
in Sydney.
The study estimated St Vincent's bore an immediate cost of at least $1.4 million a
year treating alcohol-related injuries.
When associated costs such as hospitalisation were considered the price tag blew out
to $3.2 million a year.
A third of the patients were found to have consumed alcohol before being injured by
falling, being hit by something or being cut or pierced.
Almost two thirds of patients who were injured in fights or other violence were also
found to have been drinking shortly before they were hurt.
CEO of the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER), Daryl Smeaton, who
funded the study, called on the community and government to act on the findings.
"Alcohol, when it's misused, is the most dangerous drug in our community," Mr Smeaton
told reporters today.
"It is far more dangerous than all illicit drugs put together in terms of the breadth
of harm and in terms of the number of deaths ... 10 people on average die every day in
Australia as a result of alcohol misuse.
"There is a need for public policy to change around the issue of alcohol availability
and the issue of density of outlets, which is a major contributor to significant violence
on the streets," he said.
Director of BOCSAR, Dr Don Weatherburn, said the recent alcohol-fuelled race-related
attacks across Sydney emphasised the need for appropriate legislation.
"It's obvious that any deregulation of liquor licensing or extending trading hours
for licensed premises does run the risk of imposing further burdens on a stretched hospital
system or stretched emergency department," Dr Weatherburn said.
Director of the emergency department at St Vincent's, Associate Professor Gordian Fulde,
compared his department to a "war zone" fuelled by alcohol on New Year's Eve.
"The people we see who come to an emergency department, they've been knocked out, they've
been really badly battered," Assoc Prof Fulde said.
"Give me one positive aspect of someone who is pissed, aggressive or obnoxious ...
it's a no-brainer, it's not a good thing."
He recommended revellers drink no more than five alcoholic drinks per session.

SECTOR ANALYSIS: Sales & marketing.
The boom in the UK's internet economy has led to strong demand for people with digital skills - and an ability to keep up with technology
The UK economy is growing at a quicker pace than expected, which has created a demand for a 'hunter' rather than 'farmer' mentality in sales teams across the country. The UK's internet economy has also sparked huge demand for social media digital marketeers. The challenge for marketing agencies is to keep up with the pace of such fast-moving technology which has resulted in organisations looking to develop digital marketing talent from within.
A recent report from Google claimed the UK internet economy is worth #100bn annually and is growing at 10% a year, directly employing 250,000 people.
One of the reasons for such growth is due to the growing numbers of business looking to engage with customers through social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
"Digital, digital and digital skills are in demand," says Darren Minshall, people director at full service marketing agency McCann Manchester.
Richard Bloom, associate director at media and creative firm Purple Consultancy, told Recruiter that while marketing agencies have conducted social media work for their clients for a while, social media has become a real buzz word since January. "Demand is across all areas but there is massive demand for social media people, whether it be a social media account manager who sells ideas to clients or a social media strategist or planner; the briefs are relentless."
But demand spreads across the digital gamut, a spokesperson for marketing recruitment firm Major Players told Recruiter, with candidates with proven skills in social media, SEO, paid search, website development and content, user experience and online strategy continuing to outstrip client demand.
The UK's latest GDP figures reveal the economy had expanded by 0.8% in Q3, above economists' predictions of 0.4%. One reason for such growth is a concerted effort among UK firms to hunt for new business rather than maintain the business they already have, says Dominic Quirke, director at sales staffing specialist Advancing People.
"Business development people are in demand in sales. The demand has tailed off for customer relationship managers (CRM) and account managers. Clients want people who can develop business from scratch. They need a different type of animal."
While sales departments know the kinds of skills required to develop business, finding the right digital marketing candidates is challenging as the sector is constantly evolving, says Frances Illingworth, global recruitment director at marketing communications agency WPP.
"Technology is moving fast and it is a struggle for us to ensure that our employees and potential employees are current. Many individuals with these skills seek to set up their own businesses, rather than join large companies such as WPP. Training is important, but so is the requirement on the individual themselves to be aware of emerging technologies and new media opportunities."
Ultimately, if the talent of the future doesn't exist, employers need to develop it themselves, says Minshall. "During this time the exact role and need is defining itself so sometimes patience is required. In our case, if you cannot find the right person then you develop your internal talent. We have developed a robust talent plan that incorporates clear succession routes for talent. We are also developing a clear employer brand and positioning ourselves as a destination employer."

Tweeting a revolution.(INTERNATIONAL REPORT)(Column)
Regime change can be a bloody, brutal business, as current events in the Middle East have once again confirmed. Sound communications are key to this process, but whether that includes social media is open to major doubt.
When detailed accounts of the Middle East upheavals are written, how likely is social media to be seen as a necessary component of the upheaval?
After the remarkable events that transpired across a slew of Middle East countries in recent months, many people would think, according to some accounts, that all it takes is social media plus anger to have local quasi-dictatorial regimes readying their private planes for a flight to the nearest tax haven.
Of course, it doesn't quite work that way. Lenin's observation that electricity + Soviets = communism (he should have added maniacal sociopaths too) was fatuous and so are the over-exaggerations of the power of Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, it's amazing to think that Martin Luther kick-started the Reformation without a Twitter account or Facebook profile. But I digress.
Assessing the Big Reasons
Asserting the power of social media to mobilize crowds as a necessary condition for pursuing political objectives makes for easy headlines, but anyone who actually believes that ignores what makes protests happen and tick. For example, consider anger at perceived injustices, reaction against unfair treatment, and an opportunity to nudge change along.
Social media may have made communication between and among protesters, protest groups, and rebels in Libya, Yemen, Syria, Egypt, and other countries easier than might have been the case otherwise. But Shashank Joshi, Associate Fellow at Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank, weighs in on the issue. He has researched the impact of social media on the protest movements and uprisings in the Middle East.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
"They (social media) have played a modest and enabling role," says Joshi, "but by no means a decisive nor necessary one and are absolutely on the sidelines. ... The single most important fact that proves this is that the Egyptian government was incredibly successful in shutting down internet activities but the crowds continued to gather unabated."
This echoes the views by social media commentator Evgeny Morozov in his book The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom, in which he argues against the efficacy of the internet as a tool for achieving social and political change.
Regimes of dictatorial leanings tend to control the media and means of communications (think of the old Soviet bloc), and protest-ridden Middle Eastern countries are no exception to this iron rule.
Cell phone, internet, and social media access in those Middle Eastern countries facing protest and rebellion is relatively low by Western standards. It tends to be state-controlled, but it is growing.
At least until the recent uprisings gathered pace, the media in Libya were controlled and monitored by the Gadhafi regime. This includes the cell phone network run by two government-owned operators, Al Madar and Libyana. Internet and telecoms provision is run by the Libyan government via a semiprivate company, Libya Telecom & Technology.
High Cell Phone Usage
According to sources such as the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and the CIAs World Factbook, cell net penetration in Libya is fairly high with about 5 million users out of a population of about 6 million. The Tripoli regime suspended cell phone access to overseas numbers in March, but the rebel forces succeeded in setting up their own network, thanks to equipment supplied by friendly states and some ingenuity, according to reports. Communications in two other protest-ridden Middle Eastern states, Yemen and Syria, follow a similar pattern to Libya in that they are ultimately state-owned and controlled.
Yemen has a rapidly growing population of about 25 million. More than 8 million of the population have cell phones, about 1 million have landlines, and about 2.35 million are internet users. TeleYemen, the sole provider of international communications, is one of two ISPs; the other is YemenNet. There are two statecontrolled TV and radio stations.
Syria's population, which is about 22 million, has access to about 10 million cell phones and about 4 million landlines, while TV and radio stations are state-controlled. Internet users are estimated at about 4.5 million. State-owned Syrian Telecommunication Establishment controls landlines while cellular serv ices are provided by two operators, Syriatel and MTN Syria. Facebook penetration in these troubled lands is relatively low.
Facts and Figures
According to the recent "Arab Social Media Report," published by the Dubai School of Government, Syria has 20.4 internet and 1.07 Facebook users for every 100 people. Yemen has nearly 10 internet and 0.74 Facebook users for every 100 people, and Libya has 5.51 internet and 3.74 Facebook users for every 100 people. Revolution trendsetter Egypt musters just more than 24 internet and 5.49 Facebook users per 100 people. In contrast, Facebook penetration in the U.S. and U.K. is about 50% of each of the populations.
In Joshi's view, Facebook and other social media are useful tools for making and spreading personal accounts of events, especially as independent journalists are thin on the ground. He points out that dissident groups, such as the April 6 Youth Movement and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, have been around for years though. So there was an infrastructure able to mobilize protest when the mood was right.
"In Libya it's utterly absurd to say social media played a role. Initially protesters were families of victims of [Gadhafi's] regime mobilized by old fashioned person-to-person contact. It was nothing to do with [T]witter or Facebook. Crowds amassed because of old-fashioned reasons such as public funerals," according to Joshi.
Joshi believes that satellite television, especially Al-Jazeera, has played a far more important role than social media in spreading news of protest and rebellion to viewers in the Middle East.
Risky Options
Social media and cell phone use is very risky in military communication where security is an absolute necessity. If regimes shut down cell phone networks (a double-edged sword), then rebels can turn to satellite phones instead. This can also be very risky. In 1996, Chechen rebel commander Dzhokhar Dudayev made a satellite phone call that was rumored to have been intercepted by Russian reconnaissance. His location was discovered and a missile strike was then launched, killing him. Similar, if more sophisticated, techniques are reportedly used by NATO in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Libyan rebel forces have struggled for secure communications kits. In April, the U.K. government reported it would supply military communications to the Libyan insurgents, but it refused to give any more details.
Bjoern Rupp is CEO of GSMK CryptoPhone, which supplies secure communications kits to individuals, agencies, and charities working in hostile environments. For Rupp, "Secure mobile communications can only be achieved by employing end-to-end encryption, since a malicious party with the necessary equipment and expertise can locally intercept cellular and satellite phone calls alike."
He adds that satellite networks "have the added advantage that their call data records are generally not available to the intelligence support systems of smaller nation states, thus making it more difficult for a local/national party to analyze overall traffic and call patterns."
For now, the jury is still out in deciding on the importance of social media and cell phone networks in the Middle East upheavals, but a mass and continuous tweet isn't all it takes to trigger turmoil, revolt, and political change.

Nearly half of all US.(Update)(Brief article)
Nearly half of all US adults--48%, or 112 million--used the internet for drug information in 2010, according to Manhattan Research, which found that older consumers are now joining their younger counterparts in searching for medical info online. That's more than double the 55 million Americans searching for drug info online in 2005. The research firm said it found that consumers are more likely to discuss the information they glean online with their doctors than they are to act unilaterally on it, and consumers "are considerably more likely to use pharma product and corporate websites for prescription drug information than government websites, pharmacy websites, patient association websites and social media sources."

First quarter sales were up 25% over last year and backlog increased 9% versus year end 2010 levels. Execution of our growth initiatives continues, and we're encouraged with the improving profit quality of our business. Operating margins improved to 4.5% in the first quarter, up 120 basis points versus last year, and net income increased over 94%, driven by an effective combination of gross margin expansion and operating cost leverage. In addition, the three acquisitions that we made over the last nine months are exceeding plan and have strengthened our business."
Mr. Engel continued, "We expect that the market will remain very competitive as the global economic recovery continues. The broad based strength and diversity of our business positions us well for strong financial results as the industrial market grows and the non-residential construction and utility markets begin to improve as we move through 2011 and 2012. Our first quarter performance provides a solid base for another strong year in 2011 as we continue to execute our growth initiatives, invest in our business and further improve our market position."
