SA:New microscopic species discovered in SA

South Australian ecologists have discovered four new microscopic species that play
a vital part in regional food chains.

Three ecologists working with the state government's Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray
Mouth Program discovered the zooplankton while undertaking environmental monitoring in
the region.

Environment and Conservation Minister PAUL CAICA says studying the microscopic animals
will provide critical water quality information for the CLLMM Program's drought recovery
work.

Zooplankton are also a base food source for juvenile fish, and are important for the
survival of the region's native fish species.
