WA: Family violence court becomes permanent
Western Australia's first court specialising in family violence matters will continueafter an evaluation of the two-year project found it's effective in helping victims ofdomestic assaults.
The Family Violence Court -- established as an early intervention strategy -- has helpedmore than 700 victims and their families since its inception in December 1999.
Attorney-General JIM MCGINTY says the court has been an outstanding success and willcontinue to deal with family violence issues.
He says the court's given a picture of domestic violence and the issues it raises forcourts and police.
Police Minister MICHELLE ROBERTS says the evaluation's found children were presentin 73 per cent of domestic assaults, that 46 per cent of incidents involved alcohol and29 per cent drugs.
She says it's also found a significant amount of police time is spent returning tothe same families -- 41 per cent of domestic violence incidents are repeat occurrences.
